Coca Leaf Readings
The Coca leaf has a rich and important history in Peru and Bolivia. Visitors are mostly familiar with their ability to relieve altitude sickness, but locals incorporate these important leafs in many different ways.
The Word coca comes from the Aymara dialect: q’oka means nourishment for the workers. For thousands of years it has been a fundamental part of everyday life and religious rituals of many of the South American indigenous cultures. When chewed with quicklime, a catalyst, the leaves produce a light dose of an alkaloid, suppressing hunger, pain, and thirst while providing certain vitamins that would otherwise be unavailable to the indigenous people of the highlands.
During the Inca Empire coca was considered a sacred gift from the Gods and its production and distribution were strictly controlled by the state.
From ancient times the holy leaf was used in native religious worships and in divination, reading for future predictions. The process of using the leaves to predict the future still continues today. The visionaries inherit the skills from their parents and continue the practice for future generations.
Every one participating in the "Shamanic Andean Healing Retreat" will receive a Coca leaf reading from our shaman. During this ceremony, the Shaman Wayra prays to the spirits of the mountains, called “Apus”; he raises three leaves and blows them towards the mountains (Apus) while he prays and then he spreads a handful of coca leaves over a colored cloth (unkuña) and observes the position of the leaves.
Coca leaf reading provides a unique insight to the culture, traditions and maybe even your own future! During this experience, you will be invited to sit with the shaman and you’ll have the opportunity to learn about matters important to you, such as family, friends, work and health. During the reading, Wayra and you will discover blockages you need to release as part of your Shamanic Journey. It’s quite the privilege to be able to participate in this ancient practice!!!
